Who can apply to this program?

We are seeking independent entrepreneurs, developers, data scientists and startups based in Europe or Israel. Candidates must have proven skills or references in the fields of expertise needed in the proposed challenges. Teams can apply individually or as a team, as long as they can provide a moral entity to sign the partnership convention in case of selection.

 

If my team is based outside of France, will travel costs be covered?

Travel costs will be covered so that qualifying teams based outside of France can attend the two-day bootcamp in December. Reimbursement will be subject to GE's prior validation, and details will be discussed directly with the concerned teams during the application process.

 

Which are the key dates to keep in mind to apply to the program?

For the selection process, here are the most important dates to keep in mind:

  • October 31: Applications close at 12:00pm ECT (noon, Paris time).
  • Selections to the first round will be announced during the first week of November.
  • Between November 7 and November 15: Office Hours meetings with GE Business Units, in Paris. Dates of these meetings may vary on the challenge, they will be announced shortly.
  • Mid-December (date tbc): Two-day bootcamp in Paris, with NUMA and GE Business Units, ending with final selection jury.

What's in it for candidates?


What does a winning team get if selected?

Teams selected in the final round get:

  • a financial grant of €20,000;
  • 4 months (January to April 2017) of acceleration support from General Electric's business units, GE Digital Foundry Europe and NUMA;
  • a Predix license extension;
  • GE as a business lead.

The acceleration support consists in:

  • operational, business and technical expertise by the challenge's sponsor team in one of GE's business units;
  • software development, data science and UX design support by GE Digital Foundry Europe;
  • methodology, product/service development expertise by NUMA mentors.

NUMA coordinates the work between the teams and GE.

Note for teams based in Israel: the acceleration phase in 2017 will take place in GE Digital's startup accelerator in Israel; the first part of the track, until the December bootcamp, is identical to that for European teams.
 

Is it worth participating if I am not selected in the end?

Yes! The program's selection process is designed to enable direct interactions between teams and GE's business units representatives, through which shared interests and collaborations can emerge even for non-selected startups, outside the program's scope and timeline.
 

What kind of support do the "challenge partners" and NUMA mentors bring to candidate teams?

The "challenge partners" refer to GE Business Units representatives sponsoring the challenges. Their role is to bring operational expertise, seek and share relevant data sets with the teams, mentoring them remotely at refining their solutions, and co-building an implementation plan with them. In some cases, challenge partners are in charge of engaging an external client to implement the pilot solution within their industries. They can also be Predix experts who offer development and UX support to build the apps on the cloud platform.

NUMA mentors offer guidance on lean methodology in order to ensure that teams proceed in building Minimum Viable Products first in order to validate their solution gradually. Their profiles are diversified, ranging from engineering and business to design and user experience. All NUMA mentors have experience in mentoring startups and applying lean methodologies in solutions design.


Business, Partnerships & Intellectual Property


How does the program bring candidate teams GE as a business lead?

At the end of the prototyping phase, GE Business Units and selected teams agree on how they want to pursue their collaboration within and beyond the program. They namely agree on completion criteria (a functioning app on Predix) and success criteria (functioning app with a quantifiable business impact), and define a business model to shape their future collaboration in case of success.
 

What are some of the possible business partnerships that teams and GE can agree on?

The most likely scenario for sharing the value generated by the developed app is that of a licensing agreement with the software owner. Royalties would be paid:

  • either by GE to use the software,
  • or by GE to have the software used by its clients
  • or directly by the client to use the software.

Also, GE will consider agreeing with the software owner either on a right to exclusivity (in which case the duration of this exclusivity is a parameter to be discussed), or on a right of first refusal.

The agreement between GE and the participant teams will be adapted to each situation, and discussed on an individual basis during the prototype phase. It will be key to GE’s decision of selecting a team for the implementation phase, and likewise to the team’s decision to commit themselves to the development of an app.

 

What kind of legal agreements does a team have to sign by participating to this program?

If a team is pre-selected to meet with GE Business Units in November, they will sign a mutual NDA and a convention with the terms and conditions of the program. Candidates that are selected at the final stage will sign a convention framing the financial grant and defining a  business model to last beyond the scope of the program in case of success. Teams also get the opportunity to join the GE Digital Global Alliance Program in parallel to the program. 

 

What is the GE Digital Global Alliance Program and why is it interesting for candidates?

The GE Digital Global Alliance Program is an accelerated access to Predix microservices catalogue. It aims at onboarding teams quickly, accelerating their value added activities, and collaborating with them in the market. This program helps with access to technical resources, training, and business development tools.

Who will own the Intellectual Property involved in solving the program’s challenges?

In a nutshell: Intellectual Property will be retained by the participants (both background and foreground IP). 

In more details: all background IP, i.e. the intelligence owned before the program starts until the first piece of confidential information is shared, is retained by the entities taking part in the program. Foreground IP, i.e. the intelligence generated by the participant team during the collaboration with GE, can also be owned by the participant team’s legal entity, not by GE.


Predix


What is Predix?

Predix is GE's operating system and platform for building applications that connect to industrial assets, collect and analyze data, and deliver real-time insights for optimizing industrial infrastructure and operations. Predix as a cloud-based PaaS (platform as a service) aims at enabling industrial-scale analytics for asset performance management (APM) and operations optimization by providing a standard way to connect machines, data, and people. Built on Cloud Foundry open source technology, Predix provides a microservices based delivery model with a distributed architecture (cloud, and on-machine).

When should I create a Predix account?

Participants are invited to create a Predix account starting from their application to the program. In order to ensure a faster security check for the candidates, they are asked to communicate their Predix ID on the program's application form. In case of trouble registering, do not hesitate to contact us.

 

What if my free trial expires before the end of the program?

GE will extend the duration of the Predix licenses to fit the program's timeframe.

 

How will I concretely use Predix on the course of this program?

The final solutions are required to be apps implemented on the Predix environment. Before the final selection, teams are free to build their demos on their in-house environments. The acceleration phase will in that case involve at least in part the migration of the solutions to Predix.
